UNIDENTIFIED gunmen yesterday stormed Abaji market in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, killing four people while others sustained serious injuries.
This is even as the federal government had deployed police special forces from the headquarters to Benue State on surveillance in order to put an end to the wanton killing in the state, particularly in Sankera axis.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that Abaji market, which is one of the major economic nerve centres in Katsina- Ala, was at its peak of business when the gunmen on a Toyota car arrived the market and fired sporadically on the people.
An eyewitness in the area confided in this reporter that on the eve of the market, unidentified persons came in quietly and set several houses in the settlement ablaze and fled.
“We had a premonition on the eve of the market. Some people unknown to us sneaked into our village and quietly set some houses ablaze and left, leaving many inhabitants in fear,” the source stated.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Moses Yamu who confirmed the incident said only one person was killed while three others sustained injuries from gunshots.
Yamu also said not many houses were razed except that of Tor Abaji, adding that the incident was more of a reprisal attack for the previous burning of a house in the village.
He said life had returned to normal in the area while the police had been availed the names of those suspected to be involved in the act and they would be made to face the wrath of the law.
The corpses of the victims are said to have been deposited at the morgue of General Hospital, Katsina-Ala, just as the wounded victims are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
It would be recalled that about three weeks ago, gunmen invaded Zaki Biam market, shot sporadically and killed several people, wounding many others.
